In
2008, BSIE was awarded a contract from the Boston Housing Authority
to provide design and construction administration services for
underground utility improvements to the Commonwealth Development
located in Brighton, MA.
BSIE first conducted a total station survey, mapping all existing
structures based on MA state plane coordinate and the Boston City
Base datum. BSIE found 11 structures that had not been surveyed by
previous consultants. BSIE was also able to utilize our in-house
vacuum excavation team to uncover a manhole that had been buried
1.5’ below grade under asphalt since construction from 1985. Once
survey was complete, BSIE’s field team began a systematic cleaning
and CCTV inspection of all sewer and drain lines using a high
pressure sewer jetter system and a robotic camera CCTV system. In
total, approximately 7560 linear feet of pipelines were cleaned and
inspected using these techniques. All drain and sewer manholes, as
well as catch basins, were cleaned and given a thorough visual
inspection to ascertain the condition and damage of each and how any
damage may have affected the system as a whole. A total of 72
structures were inspected throughout the project area.
Once the field data was obtained, BSIE’s engineers reviewed the CCTV
inspection videos and compiled a design recommendation plan in which
the problems with the system were prioritized in order to allocate
the given construction budget and address the most critical
infrastructure issues. Currently the project is ongoing, BSIE has
submitted construction design recommendations, and construction is
expected to begin in the summer of 2009.
