In 2007 BSIE was contracted as one of the
consulting firms to assist the Boston Water and Sewer Commission in
their work on the CSO (combined sewer overflow) in the Bulfinch
Triangle of Boston City Proper. On this project BSIE provided QL-A
and QL-B SUE data for the Bulfinch Triangle area, which includes TD
Bank North Garden, the Tip O'Neil Federal Building, MBTA light rail
Stations, and numerous business and office buildings. BSIE was to
provide preliminary and final construction plans for the sewer
separation of the Bulfinch neighborhood.
The challenge of this particular area was the relatively flat
topography and low lying elevations. This, combined with a dense
utility infrastructure, made for a challenging SUE program to
determine the best possible available trenches for various size
storm drain lines. BSIE reviewed the preliminary designs and was
able to recommend a scope for providing QL-A and B information
through use of electronic utility designation and vacuum excavation
services where it was thought that conflicts would arise.
