BSI Engineering, Inc. was contracted by Commonwealth Engineering and
the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to provide Subsurface
Utility Engineering services for a two mile stretch of US Route 44
through the Town of Gloucester, RI.
Commonwealth Engineering in conjunction with RI DOT was planning
various storm drainage structure improvements through the two mile
stretch of US Route 44. Theses improvements would require multiple
new drain lines to cross existing underground telecommunications
facilities. BSIE was selected to determine whether the proposed
drainage design would be in conflict with the existing underground
telecommunications duct banks running along both sides of US Route
44.
In order to complete this task, BSIE provided traffic management
support per MUTCD regulations utilizing RI State Trooper Police
Detail. This allowed BSIE’s designation and vacuum excavation crews
to safely obtain the required quality level A and B SUE information,
per CI/ASCE 38-02 and provide our client with a comprehensive
subsurface utility plan depicting the exact location of the
telecommunications duct banks in relation to the proposed drainage
design. In turn this information provided valuable cost savings to
the RI DOT that could be carried from design through construction.
